The result? The first ever use of ceramic metal halide lamps for tunnel lighting coupled with T5 fluorescent energy efficient lamps renowned for its higher lighting performance at the tunnel’s entrance and exits. With only one and a half years to deliver the landmark product, Straits Design and Schréder created a product that became a world reference till today, enticing countless global lighting professionals to view Malaysia’s and the world’s first ever Smart Tunnel.

A FLOOD OF IDEAS

Malaysia needed the Smart Tunnel to double as a road and flood control channel. But how does one handle the issue of lighting during severe flooding? Straits Design through Schréder’s R&D Center in Tianjin, met this challenge by designing flood-proof lighting with a very high protection index of IP68, capable of withstanding pressures equivalent to 25m head of water with mounting able to withstand a water flow rate of 5m/sec!
