A bespoke lighting solution that meets sustainable, aesthetic and technical requirements
Since 2011, the Municipality of Tilburg has been working on a large-scale transition to LED lighting in public spaces. While it initially focused on replacing public lighting luminaires, it is now focusing on areas that require more customised solutions. One of the latest projects was replacing the distinctive PUNTILA with its yellow curves in the Koolhoven residential district.
Together, with the Municipality of Tilburg and the contractor Van den Heuvel, we worked to find a more sustainable lighting solution that would meet both aesthetic and technical requirements.
VALINTA, the perfect choice
The VALINTA SCOPE, a modern LED luminaire with a lampshade design similar to the original PUNTILA and a customised satin finish, was chosen.
We wanted to retain the PUNTILA’s signature translucent glow. By adding a satin-finished cover, we were able to successfully recreate that soft effect, which is a much more aesthetically pleasing solution than a standard spotlight.
The VALINTA SCOPE has also been customised with a bespoke mounting system that perfectly integrates the existing curved poles, enabling the municipality to preserve the area’s distinctive ambiance. This bespoke approach was a deciding factor in choosing the luminaire. It demonstrates how good communication and collaboration can strike a balance between standardisation and customisation.
Our goal was to preserve the unique atmosphere created by the PUNTILA while meeting today’s technical requirements. Ultimately, we designed a bespoke solution that fits the Tilburg masts perfectly.
Smart lighting for a more sustainable future
This public lighting replacement project is part of the Municipality of Tilburg’s ambitious sustainability goals, primarily focusing on achieving CO₂-neutral status by 2050. By upgrading their lighting infrastructure, the municipality aims to reduce energy consumption and operating costs, while also improving safety and quality of life in public spaces.
This follows the installation of FLEXIA TOP and IZYLUM luminaires in other areas of the city. All of the new luminaires are equipped with a Zhaga node, enabling them to be easily connected to the Schréder EXEDRA smart lighting platform. This allows the municipality to control and monitor its network.
Connecting the lighting enables us to respond more quickly to any issues and provide a better service to our residents. This will make the lighting system more reliable and modern for the entire municipality.
Going beyond the standard
Although most LED conversion projects follow a standardised approach, this one required additional effort from both parties. As the luminaire cover and bracket had to be customised, the project took slightly longer than it would have done with a standard luminaire.
However, this additional investment has paid off, producing a technically and aesthetically convincing result with which both parties are very satisfied.
We have a good working relationship with Schréder, which extends beyond standard products to include projects that demand a more customised approach. It’s a pleasure to work with a company that is consistently focused on finding a solution.
This project is a prime example of how we collaborate with our partners to develop bespoke solutions rather than simply replacing luminaires.
