Franeker is a historic city and home to one of the world’s oldest operating planetariums. To enhance the city centre and encourage people to visit after dark, the local authorities launched a plan to highlight important monuments and buildings.
A partner for the best solution
The Municipality of Waadhoeke held a consultation to explore the best way to enhance the city centre, as it is very conscious of light pollution. We proposed the VALINTA SCOPE GOBO, an extremely flexible solution for projecting intricate images, and organised a night-time demonstration to showcase its powerful impact. The local authorities liked the engaging night-time ambiance and approved the proposal.
VALINTA SCOPE GOBO, a versatile solution
With the concept approved, we discussed the locations to install the floodlights. Six iconic spots were chosen to showcase the city’s heritage, including the planetarium and the Kaatsbaan (the city is renowned as the capital of kaatsen, a handball sport, and hosts the largest annual competition). We then made a detailed photometric study to determine the correct angles and distances for each VALINTA SCOPE GOBO for a carefully thought-out aesthetic. Citytec took care of the installation. The projections have certainly enhanced the nocturnal atmosphere, creating a theatrical effect in the city centre.
The VALINTA SCOPE GOBO floodlights are connected to the public lighting network to facilitate integration. The installation was smooth and the local authorities, happy with the outcome, are now looking at opportunities to use the VALINTA SCOPE GOBOs for other applications, such as improving traffic safety. Projecting speed limits or other images could enhance pedestrian awareness in busy areas.
